# Close an event

An event moves from **New** to **Open** when it is taken on, and to **Closed** when it is concluded. See [The statuses](/incidents/event-types#the-statuses).

1. Open the event and choose the **Details** tab.
2. Set the **Status** to **Closed**.
3. Enter the **Closing date**. Without it the event cannot be saved as closed.
4. Click the **Save** icon (a floppy disk).

The person who created the event receives a notification of the change.

Closing does not depend on the linked [corrective actions](/incidents/link-a-corrective-action): an event can be closed while its actions are still in progress, and the actions carry on with their own deadlines.

To take on an event just recorded, set the **Status** to **Open** in the same way, with no date.
