# Statuses

The same statuses appear on the recipients of an action, in the scheduler and on the public verification page of a permit to work. They are not set by hand: 4HSE derives them from the certificates that exist and from their dates.

Status

Meaning

**New**

A need has been identified but nothing has been recorded yet. A worker enrolled on a course stays New until a session is recorded or a past certificate is registered.

**Valid**

A currently effective certificate exists.

**Expiring**

The certificate is still valid but its expiry falls within the notice window. The notice window is the **Expiring** field of the action; when that is empty, the one set for that action type in the project configuration applies.

**Expired**

The expiry date has passed: the obligation has to be renewed.

**Revoked**

The certificate was withdrawn before its natural expiry, for example because the conditions it was issued under no longer hold. Shown with a red badge.

**Rejected**

The certificate was not approved. Shown with a red badge.

You meet **Revoked** and **Rejected** most often on [permits to work](/permit-to-work/), where withdrawing or refusing an authorisation is part of the ordinary flow.

## Where each one comes from

[Section titled “Where each one comes from”](#where-each-one-comes-from)

- **New** comes from the absence of a certificate, or from a certificate still in draft: not from a date.
- **Valid**, **Expiring** and **Expired** are computed from the expiry of the most recent certificate and from the notice window of the action.
- **Revoked** and **Rejected** are set explicitly on a certificate.

This is why a status cannot be changed directly: to move a recipient out of **New** you record a session or [register past compliance](/prevention-and-protection/register-past-compliance), and to move one out of **Expired** you issue a new certificate.
