# The associated user

The **associated user** links a **user** — the account that logs in — to a **person** — the individual registered in the project. See [Users and people](/users-and-permissions/users-and-people) for why the two are separate.

The link is made from the **Associated user** item of the person’s record, by entering the user’s email address: the email is the key of the association.

## The permission levels

[Section titled “The permission levels”](#the-permission-levels)

Level

What the user can do with the person they are associated with

**None**

No access

**Manager/Read-Write**

Read and change the person’s information

**User/Read**

View the person’s information, without changing it

**Project default**

Inherits the level set in the project configuration, **None** if it has not been set

## What it is for

[Section titled “What it is for”](#what-it-is-for)

The associated user gives a worker access to their own position without extending it to the company’s data. The association does not add the user to any group of the project or its offices, so on the project their level stays **NA**. With **User/Read** on their person, the worker sees their courses, their PPE and their deadlines, and nothing else.

To create the link, see [Assign an associated user](/users-and-permissions/assign-a-related-user).

To see the whole flow, follow [Give a worker access to their own record only](/users-and-permissions/give-a-worker-access).
