# Users and people

4HSE keeps two things apart that are easy to confuse.

- A **user** is an account that logs in. It is identified by a unique email address, which is both the username and the main contact, and it is what permissions are assigned to.
- A **person** is a real individual registered in the project, with their personal data, their job, their courses, their PPE. It is what safety obligations are assigned to.

A worker who never opens 4HSE is a person without a user. An external consultant who administers the project may be a user without being a person. Most of the time, though, the two refer to the same human being — and connecting them is what the [associated user](/users-and-permissions/related-user) is for.

## What a user can do

Through their account, a user can view information, enter data, edit records and use the platform’s functions. What exactly they can do is determined by the groups they belong to.

Each user can be associated with projects, offices, and one person.

## Where users come from

Users are not created in a central list: you add them where they are needed, by entering their email address in a group of a project, an office, a person, a supplier or the multi-company panel. The same email in different places means different permissions — see [Create a user](/users-and-permissions/create-a-user).
